Veliky Novgorod-based Akron, Russia’s major mineral fertilizers producer, is expanding its rolling stock fleet by acquiring 500 new hopper cars from Ruzkhimmash.
The first 100 cars were delivered to Akron’s facility in Veliky Novgorod at the end of 2023, 400 more units are to arrive during 2024.
The new rolling stock features improved operational characteristics with a capacity of 107 cubic meters / 71 tons, which allows of transporting a wide range of mineral fertilizers in bulk.
The service life of the new hoppers is 26 years. Akron intends to deploy them to carry carbamide and ammonium nitrate.
With the new acquisition, Akron will own more than 2,200 railcars. The company also rents some 2,500 railcars.
