Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in March 2021: Grain Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in March 2021 declined by 8.6% year-on-year. Export was down 23%. Transit grew by 1.6%, import increased by 11.8%, cabotage by 14.1%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in March 2021 made 1%.

    53.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 24.6% and liquid foodstuffs for 8.6%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in other bulk (grab) (up 5.9-fold), reefer cargo (up 4.4-fold) and other bulk (suction) (up 2.5-fold).

    The commodities that decreased were piece cargo (-60.4%), other general cargo (-37.1%) and grain (-32.4%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 57% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in March. Astrakhan handled 33.2%, and Olya 9.8% of the total.
