More than 36 Million Tons Carried by Northern Sea Route in 2023

  • During 2023, 36.254 million tons of cargo was carried by the Northern Sea Route during 2023, more than 250 thousand tons above the target, Rosatom said in a statement.

    ‘We have been able to reach the record-breaking result thanks to our partners, first and foremost to Novatek, whose LNG accounts for more than half of all shipments,’ Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, noted.

    He also mentioned other major shippers using the Northern Sea Route including Gazprom neft, LUKoil and Norilsk Nickel, who rerouted their shipments from West to East.

    Transit freight traffic by the Northern Sea Route is not just back to the year of 2023 level but reached a new historic maximum, Likhachev said.

    During 2023, transit freight traffic amounted to 2.129 million tons, mainly crude oil, which accounted for 1.5 million tons. Ferrous ore concentrate made some 350 thousand tons, plus Gazprom loaded a tanker with 70 thousand tons, and ELSI Mining loaded another vessel with 70 thousand tons.
