Keel Laid for Second Low-Draft 22740M Icebreaker

  • On November 15, Onezhsky Shipbuilding an Shiprepair Yard laid the keep for a second new generation 22740M low-draft icebreaker, Rosmorport has reported.

    Earlier, in May this year, the lead icebreaker of the design was laid. These vessels are currently Russia’s most powerful icebreakers with a low draft (3.2 meters).

    The power unit capacity is 6 MW, the ice notation is Icebreaker6. The 1105 icebreakers built in Finland that are currently in use have a capacity of some 4.6 MW.

    The new icebreaker will be deployed in the Sea od Azov, the Volga-Caspian Shipping Canal, in Russia’s inland waterways, and, should the need arise, in other areas.

    The icebreaker will be equipped to assist vessels and participate in search and rescue operations in ice conditions as well as in ice-free waters.

    She will have a helipad for drones used to monitor ice conditions and search and rescue operations. She will be also capable of transporting 20’ containers on the aft deck.
