Reconstruction of Berths No 9 and 10 has started in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Commercial Sea Port, the RF Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport has reported.
After the reconstruction is completed, the two berths will have a capacity of more than 800 thousand tons of cargo, which will mean the overall port throughput will increase up to 4.5 mn tons.
Berth 9 designed to handle general cargo including vehicles is currently out of exploitation, so it is the first to be refurbished. The contractor will have to remove 146.5 meters of crane rails and install new infrastructure.
After that, Berth 10, which will be used to handle containers, is to be modernized.
After the project is completed, the quayside will be extended from the current 550 m to 700 m and will allow to handle both bulk and general cargo.
The annual capacity of Berth 9 will make more than 200 thousand tons, and that of Berth 10 will be increased from 300 thousand tons up to 650 thousand tons.
The project is worth 1.3 bn rubles ($21 mn) and is to be completed by December 2024.
