34.85 mn tons of cargo was carried by the Northern Sea Route during 2021, 2 mn tons more than during 2020, when the traffic made 32.97 mn tons.
The 2021 result is also above the target figure, which was 32 mn tons, according to Rosatom.
Back in 2016, when freight traffic by the Northern Sea Rote for the first time exceeded the best results achieved during the Soviet era (6.57 mn tons in 1987), 7.47 mn tons was carried.
Since 2018, when Rosatom was appointed infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route responsible for the NSR Development federal project, freight traffic by Russia’s Arctic route almost doubled.
