First Reactor for “Chukotka” Nuclear Icebreaker

  • The machine-building division of Rosatom based in Podolsk has loaded a RITM-200 reactor for delivery to St. Petersburg where it will be installed onto the nuclear icebreaker “Chukotka” currently under construction.

    Since 2013, Rosatom has loaded nine new generation reactor units for universal nuclear icebreakers, the tenth unit is planned for delivery to the yard by the end of 2023, Rosatom said in a statement.

    The “Chukotka” will be the fourth serial Design 22220 nuclear icebreaker built in Russia. The lead vessel in the series, the “Arktika” and two serial icebreakers, the “Sibir” and the “Ural”, are successfully operating in the Northern Sea Route.
