Azov and Black Sea Basin Throughput in February: Ore Soars 70%

  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Azov and Black Sea basin ports in February 2020 declined by 4% year-on-year. Export was down 6.9% and cabotage down 3.6%. Import increased by 29.7%. Transit remained much on the previous year’s level (+0.2%).

    The share of the Azov and Black Sea basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in February 2020 amounted to 29.5%.

    More than half of the total was oil and products, with crude oil accounting for 35.6% of the overall throughput, and oil products for 25%. Coal and coke have the third largest share in the aggregate throughput amounting to 12.6%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the liquid foodstuffs segment (up 2.1-fold), ore (+69.8%) and reefer cargo (+49%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (grab) (-60.4%), liquified gas (-56.8%) and Ro-Ro (-55.5%).

    Novorossiysk accounted for 63.7% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Azov and Black basin sea ports in January. Tuapse handled 10.2%, and Taman 8.5% of the total.
