  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in January 2020 grew by 46.1% year-on-year. Import surged 3.5-fold, cabotage was up 81.2%, transit up 83.6%, and export up 3.8%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in January 2020 amounted to 1.1%.

    52.7% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 24.1% and timber and logs for 4.2%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the Ro-Ro segment (up 21-fold), other general cargo (up 3-fold) and other bulk (grab) (up 2.1-fold).

    The commodities that decreased were foodstuffs (-52.6%), containerized cargo (-3.6%) and piece cargo (-2.4%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 71.5% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in January. Astrakhan handled 24.4%, and Olya 4.1% of the total.
