By 2030, a flotilla of icebreakers should be formed to provide year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route, told the Arctic Forum in St. Petersburg Alexey Likhachev, Director of the Rosatom State Corporation.
At present, the corporation has four nuclear icebreakers in its fleet, the powerful “50 Let Pobedy” and four smaller icebreakers, “Yamal”, “Vaigach” and “Taimyr”, he reminded.
In 2021-2022 two more icebreakers, “Ural” and “Sibir” are to be delivered. There is a decision of the Government providing for the construction of two more icebreakers by 2030.
“This is the date, by which the flotilla is to have been formed to provide for the year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route”, A.Likhachev said.
“It will consist of five universal icebreakers plus “50 Let Pobedy” plus the 120 mWt “Leader”, which will allow to use the Northern Sea Rote on the commercial basis round the year”.
