Russian Ports’ Throughput in December 2020: Ore Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput of the Russian sea ports in December 2020 decreased by 4.6% year-on-year.

    Export was down 2.2%, transit declined by 11.9%, cabotage by 23.7%. Import, on the contrary, grew by 8%.

    Almost 50% in the Russian sea ports’ commodity structure was oil and products. In December, crude oil accounted for 26.7% of the total volume and oil products for 17.6%. Coal and coke constituted 23.9% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the sugar segment (up 2.3-fold), metal scrap (+73.2%) and ore (+54.6%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (suction) (-39%), foodstuffs (-24.5%) and ferry cargo (-19.4%).

    The Baltic basin accounted for 30.3% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian sea ports in December. The Azov and Black Sea basin handled 30.3%, the Far Eastern basin accounted for 26.7%, the Arctic basin for 11.8% and the Caspian basin for 0.9% of the total.
