New Russian Icebreaker Ready for Mooring Trial

    End of last week, the nuclear icebreaker “Arktika” under construction at the Baltic Yard in St. Petersburg was shifted to Berth 7 of the fitting-out wharf for mooring trial.

    “Arktika” is the first nuclear icebreaker of the 22220 Project. The technical design was developed by Iceberg construction bureau in 2009, the construction started in 2013.

    The icebreaker is intended for operating in the West Arctic region including the Barents, Pechora and Kara seas and the more shallow Yenisey and Ob river mouths.

    When completed, “Arktika” will be the world’s largest and most powerful nuclear icebreaker.

    Vessel characteristics:

    • LOA – 173.3 m,
    • Beam – 34 m,
    • Draft – 10.5 m / 8.65 m,
    • Speed – 22 knots (in clear water),
    • Power capacity – 60 MWt,
    • Icebreaking capacity – 2.8 m.
