Baltic Shipyard Starts Cutting Steel for New Nuclear Icebreaker

  • St. Petersburg-based Baltic Shipyard has started cutting steel for a new 22220 Design nuclear-powered icebreakers. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the customer, Atomflot, and the Russian Register of Shipping.

    At present, Baltic Shipyard is building two 22220 Design nuclear icebreakers, the “Yakutia” and the “Chukotka”. The universal nuclear icebreakers already in service, the “Arktika”, the “Sibir” and the “Ural” are the largest and most powerful icebreaking vessels in the world.

    Design 22220 vessel particulars:

    • Deep displacement: 33,540 tons
    • Length: 174 m
    • Beam: 34 m
    • Draft on design waterline: 10.5 m
    • Minimum operating draft: 9.3 m
    • Crew: 53 persons
    • Life cycle: 40 years.
