Car Sales in Russia Double in May 2023

  • In January-May 2023, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia decreased by 26% year-on-year to 228.5 thousand units, according to the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee (AEB AMC).

    In May alone, new car and LCV sales surged 2.1-fold year-on-year but declined 5.2% month-on-month to make 51.5 thousand units.

    All the Top 5 car brands in Russia saw their sales grow.

    Lada remained the leader of the Russian car market in May 2023 with its sales up 3.9-fold year-on-year to 23.9 thousand units.

    China’s Haval remained the second with 7.6 thousand units sold, up 8.5-fold year-on-year.

    Another Chinese brand. Geely, retained the third position in the rating with its sales surging 7.8-fold in May to 7.1 thousand units.

    GAZ commercial vehicles continued to rate the fourth with more than 3.9 thousand units sold, up 2.1-fold year-on-year.

    Chinese brand Changan climbed up to the fifth position with its sales amounting to more than 2.5 thousand units, up 7.8-fold year-on-year.

    Most of the brands sold in the Russian market demonstrated a negative trend in May 2023, the few exceptions apart from the brands in the Top 5 being China’s Great Wall (up 19-fold), GAC (up 14.7-fold), FAW (up 7.6-fold) and Russia’s UAZ (up 80%).

    Other brands saw their sales decline significantly.
