Feasibility Study for Hydrogen Plant on Sakhalin Finalized

  • Rusatom Overseas, part of Rosatom State Corp., and Air Liquide, have announced finalizing the feasibility study for a hydrogen production facility project on the island of Sakhalin in the Russian Far East.

Following the completion of the feasibility study, the partners are embarking on the next stage of the project, FEED (Front-End-Engineering Design).

The parties signed a memorandum of understanding on the project in April 2021. The hydrogen production facility construction is an indispensable part of the large-scale project aimed at developing a hydrogen cluster in Sakhalin region and establishing a basis for hydrogen supply chains to serve both local consumer and overseas markets, Rosatom said in a statement.

According to Vladimir Limarenko, Governor of Sakhalin Oblast, the project envisages developing low-carbon hydrogen production using the vapour conversion of methane technology and environmentally friendly methods of capturing CO2.

Yevgeny Pakermanov, President of Rusatom Overseas, said that negotiations with potential importers in Japan and Republic of Korea are underway.
