Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput in October 2021: Timber and Logs Down

  • The total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in October 2021 increased by 2.3% year-by-year. According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, export grew by 0.5%, cabotage by 7.7%, and import by 30.4%. Transit, on the contrary, dropped by 43.1%.

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in October 2021 amounted to 26.6%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In October 2021, coal and coke accounted for 48.4% of the total volume, crude oil for 22.8% and oil products for 5%. Containerized cargo constituted 8.7% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the reefer cargo segment (+93.4%), ro-ro (+77.3%) and piece cargo (+63.7%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were non-ferrous metals (-77.5%), chemical and mineral fertilizers (-39.2%) and timber and logs (-33.2%).

    Vostochny accounted for 36.4% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in October. Vanino handled 15%, and Vladivostok 13.6% of the total.
