Freight Traffic by Saimaa Canal Up 5% in January-September 2021

  • According to the Statistics Finland, freight traffic by the Saimaa Canal amounted to 967.7 thousand tons during January-September 2021, up 4.9% year-on-year.

    848 cargo vessels transited the Canal during the period under report, up 2.7% year-on-year. 489 of them, or 57.7% of the total were flying the Russian flag, down 2.6% year-on-year.

    The main commodity transported was timber and logs, which grew by 8.1% up to 436.1 thousand tons. Sawn goods were up 2.1-fold to 56 thousand tons.

    Fertilizers increased by 37.6% up to 146.6 thousand tons, coal by 38.8% up to 18.6 thousand tons, and metals up 126.7-fold up to 9.5 thousand tons.

    Construction cargo declined by 16.6%, paper by 22.1%, pulp by 29.5%, and chemicals by 49.8%.
