Russian Railways’ Traffic Up 3.4% in January-October

  • During January-October 2021, Russian Railways loaded 1,066.5 mn tons of cargo, up 3.4% year-on-year. Most of the commodities demonstrated positive growth.

    Coal loading increased by 7% up to 309.3 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, was up 3.3% to 178.6 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore increased by 0.3% up to 100.2 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were up 3% to 56.7 mn tons, timber and logs up 2.8% up to 35.6 mn tons, cement up 5.3% to 22.9 mn tons, ferrous metal scrap up 17.5% to 13.7 mn tons.

    Industrial and forming materials loading grew by 4.3% up to 29.5 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers by 3.5% up to 53.7 mn tons, and coke by 6.4% up to 9.8 mn tons.

    Construction cargo loading was down 4.9% to 108 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 0.5% to 20.1 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw suphfur down 1.2% to 16.6 mn tons, and grain down 5.1% to 20.4 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-October 2021 made 2,190.4 bn tons per km, up 4.3% year-on-year.

    In October, Russian Railways loaded 110.3 mn tons of cargo, up 0.5% year-on-year.

    Cargo throughput in October amounted to 231 bn tons per km, up 2.8% year-on-year.
