First AIS-Equipped Buoys Installed on Northern Sea Route

  • Russia’s Hydrographic has installed new buoys in the Sea Channel in Ob Bay in the Kara Sea. For the first time, buoys equipped with Automatic Identification System stations are used.

    The new buoys were installed as part of the reconstruction project of the Sea Channel after a new turn was added in the northern part of the waterway. 22 buoys were installed, six of them (at the entrance, at the exit and at the turning point) are equipped with AIS stations.

    Previously, AIS-equipped buoys were not used on the Northern Sea Route. Such buoys send radio signals allowing vessels to identify their type and coordinates in any weather conditions, which provides for better navigation safety.
