Russian Railways have embarked on a project to build a new tunnel on the Ulruchyi – Kovali section of the TransSibrian Railway in Amur region, Russian Railways said in their social media account.
The new Kerak tunnel will have two tracks and will be 926.9 meter long. It will replace the existing 910-meter long tunnel that was built in 1911 and is not large enough to cope with the growing traffic.
The new tunnel will be located not far from the old one. It will be the longest tunnel on the Zabaikalsk Railway. 200 people and 30 units of various machinery will be deployed to build the new tunnel.
After the new tunnel is put into operation, the old one will be used as a drainage and evacuation facility.
