Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in May 2021: Crude Oil Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in May 2021 grew by 15% year-on-year. Transit was up 33.4%, and import up 67.6%. Cabotage decreased by 9.1%, and export by 14.3%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2021 made 0.8%.

    56.2% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 18.4% and liquid foodstuffs for 7.1%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in liquid foodstuffs (+72%), other bulk (grab) (+50.8%) and crude oil (+33%).

    The commodities that decreased were Ro-Ro (-60%), timber and logs (-21.9%) and grain (-14.8%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 64.1% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in May. Astrakhan handled 28.8%, and Olya 7.2% of the total.
