Global Ports intends to convert its container terminal Moby Dik in Kronshtadt in the Big port of St. Petersburg to handle cars and ro-ro cargo, Global Ports CEO Albert Likholet told journalists this week.
The terminal stopped handling containers since the end of 2019 ‘for a number of objective reasons’, he said. During 2020, Moby Dik handled some 230 thousand tons of non-containerized cargo.
‘We consider this result very good and we have plans to convert the terminal in the near future, we plan to focus on handling ro-ro cargo and cars at the terminal,’ Likholet said.
At present, Global Ports is negotiating with feeder ro-ro operators and expects to have a test service to Moby Dik in the near future.
According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, during June-May 2021 Moby Dik handled 115.4 thousand tons of cargo including solid bulk, piece cargo and ferrous metals.
Global Ports have three other terminals in the Russian Gulf of Finland, two of them, First Container Terminal and Petrolesport are located in St. Petersburg, and Ust-Luga Container Terminal in the port of Ust-Luga, all of them specialized in container handling. In addition to containers, Ust-Luga Container Terminal also handles coal and coke, while Petrolesport handles ro-ro cargo.
