Container Traffic via Caspian Basin Ports in May 2021 Down 12.5%

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total container throughput via the Caspian basin ports in May 2021 declined by 12.5% year-on-year. Cabotage decreased by 26.1%, and export by 48.5%. Import, on the contrary, surged 2.5-fold.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total container traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2021 amounted to 0.05%.

    Laden container throughput in the Caspian was up 1.9%. Reefer containers accounted for 1.2% of the total laden container traffic, and dry containers for 98.8%. Imports made 81.4% of all the laden containers, exports accounted for 11.2%, and cabotage for 7.4% of the total.

    Empty container traffic declined by 27.1%.

    The port of Astrakhan accounted for 85.8% of the aggregate container throughput via the Caspian basin ports in May. Olya handled 14.2% of the total.
