Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput in March 2021: Liquefied Gas Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in March 2021 increased by 2.6% year-on-year. Export grew by 1.1%, cabotage was up 1.8%, and import up 45.8%. Transit, on the contrary, declined by 11.2%

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in March 2021 amounted to 27.4%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In March 2021, coal and coke accounted for 49% of the total volume, crude oil for 22.2% and oil products for 6.8%. Containerized cargo constituted 9.4% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the other bulk (suction) segment (up 2.8-fold), non-ferrous metals (up 2.5-fold) and other bulk (grab) (up 2.1-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were liquefied gas (-45.6%), chemical and mineral fertilizers (-40.9%) and timber and logs (-31.9%).

    Vostochny accounted for 36.7% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in March. Vanino handled 17.9%, and Vladivostok 14.1% of the total.
