Russian Railways are embarking on the second stage of BAM and TransSiberian Railway modernization project.
According to the state railway monopoly, construction and overhaul works are starting at thirty priority facilities. By the end of the year, 212 facilities are to be overhauled.
It is also planned to build 1.3 thousand kilometers of new mainline rails, 27 passing tracks on the BAM railway, and a railway line to bypass the Shkotovo – Smolyaninovo span on the TransSib.
24 railway stations and 6 passing tracks are to be overhauled.
Also, 829 kilometers of railway tracks from Volochayevka to Vanino are to be electrified.
The project is aimed to increase the annual capacity of the two railways from the current 144 mn tons up to 180 mn tons.
The project is worth 720 bn rubles ($9.5 bn) including measures to expand transit container traffic.
