Freight traffic via the Saimaa Canal grew by 60.9% during the two months of 2021 making 69.7 thousand tons.
According to the Statistics Finland, 38 vessels transited the Canal during the period under report, up 52% year-on-year.
The main commodity transported was timber and logs, which grew 2.9-fold up to 26.6 thousand tons. Other commodities included construction cargo (up 41.1% to 13.8 thousand tons), fertilizers (up 63.3% to 116.6 thousand tons), and paper (up 35.8% to 8.6 thousand tons).
The Saimaa Canal was closed for scheduled maintenance from February 8 till March 22 this year, the first vessel to transit the Canal after resuming navigation was the Gibraltar-flagged dry cargo ship “Pinta” en route from Klaipeda to Imatra.
