Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in December 2020: Reefer Cargo Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in December 2020 declined by 16.2% year-on-year. Transit was down 8.5%, and export down 30.8%. Import decreased by 43%. Cabotage, on the contrary, surged 2.7-fold.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in December 2020 made 0.9%.

    60.7% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 20.3% and liquid foodstuffs for 7%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in reefer cargo segment (up 4.8-fold), chemical and mineral fertilizers (up 2.7-fold) and foodstuffs (+97.3%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were ferrous metals (-83.3%), piece cargo (-78.2%) and other general cargo (-73%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 62.8% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in December. Astrakhan handled 35.5%, and Olya 1.7% of the total.
