Russian Railways’ Cargo Up YoY, Down MoM in January

  • During January 2021, Russian Railways loaded 101.2 mn tons of cargo, up 1% year-on-year and down 5.8% month-on-month.

    Month-on-month, the volume of almost commodity categories declined, the only exception being chemical and mineral fertilizers, which grew by 5.6%

    Year-on-year, coal loading increased by 5.2% up to 30.8 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 9.6% down to 18 mn tons.

    Industrial and forming materials were up 8.4% to 2.3 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 10.6% to 7.7 mn tons, coke up 4.4% to 0.9 mn tons.

    Timber and logs grew by 9.4% to 3.4 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur by 5.3% to 1.6 mn tons, ferrous metal scrap by 39% up to 0.9 mn tons, and grain by 68.8% up to 2.7 mn tons.

    Other commodities declined.

    Ferrous and manganese ore was down 2.9% to 9.8 mn tons, ferrous metals down 10.8% to 5.7 mn tons, construction cargo down 3.8% to 8.1 mn tons, chemicals and soda down 5.9% to 2.1 mn tons, and cement down 0.1% to 1.2 mn tons,

    Rail cargo throughput in January 2021 made 211.6 bn tons per km, up 1% year-on-year.
