Russian Railways’ Export via Sea Ports Up 4.7% in 2020

  • According to Russian Railways, the loading of cargo designated for export via Russian sea ports made 331.7 mn tons during 2020 increasing 4.7% year-on-year.

    50.3% of the entire volume is coal, oil and products accounted for 22.9% of the total export rail freight, ferrous metals for 6.9%, fertilizers for 6.2%, and grain for 3.4% of the total.

    Coal loading increased by 7.6% year-on-year up to 166.7 mn tons during the period under report.

    Coal loading designated for South Russian ports grew by 20.6% year-on-year up to 18 mn tons, that to North-Western ports by 2.9% up to 55.7 mn tons, and that to the Russian Far East by 8.2% exceeding 93 mn tons.

    All in all, 134.1 mn tons of export cargo, 2.3% above the level of 2019, was designated for the North-West sea ports. The Southern region ports accounted for 79 mn tons, up 3.9% year-on-year. Cargo volume loaded for export via the ports of the Russian Far East made 110.4 mn tons, up 8.6% year-on-year.

    In December 2020, 31.1 mn tons of cargo was loaded for export via Russian sea ports, up 23.6% year-on-year. Export cargo loaded for rail transportation to the North-West sea ports increased by 8.6% up to some 12.6 mn tons, that designated to the South Russia ports was up 1.3% to 7.9 mn tons, and that to the Russian Far East up 22.5% to 9.8 mn tons.
