Grain Export and Import in January-October 2020: Wheat Import into Russia Up in October

  • According to the RF Federal Customs Service statistics, during January-October Russia exported 29.3 mn tons of wheat and meslin, up 10.9% year-on-year. In terms of value, grain export increased by 14.9% up to $6.1 bn.

    According to grain market experts, Russia will export record-breaking volumes of grain in the harvest 2020-2021 season. However, as TASS reports quoting Eduard Zernin, Chairman of the Russian Union of Grain Exporters, the Ministry of agriculture and the Ministry of economic development are currently preparing a resolution to introduce a duty on wheat exports from Russia. Last time such a duty was applied in Russia during the 2015-2016 season.

    Wheat import into Russia during January-October 2020 declined by 25.6% down to 104.6 thousand tons. Corn import, on the contrary, grew by 57.8% up to 45.3 thousand tons. Barley import made 38 thousand tons increasing 16.6% year-on-year.

    In terms of value, wheat import was down 0.3% to $33.5 mn. Corn import was up 18.8% to $112.5 mn, barley import surged 93.3% up to $5.8 mn.

    In October 2020 alone, wheat and meslin export made 4.6 mn tons, up 22% year-on-year and down 8.6% month-on-month. In terms of value, it grew by 35.4% year-on-year and declined by 3.6% month-on-month to make $952.2 mn.

    Wheat import in October made 17.6 thousand tons, up 50.4% year-on-year and up 2.4-fold month-on-month. Value-wise, wheat import increased by 90.3% year-on-year and surged 2.7-fold month-on-month up to $5.9 mn.

    Corn import in October dropped by 85.7% year-on-year making only 100 tons. In terms of value, it decreased by 66.7% year-on-year to make $200 thousand. In September 2020, corn import was non-existent.

    Barley import in October made 11.1 thousand tons, down 59.9% year-on-year and up 73.4% month-on-month, worth $1.4 mn, up 2-fold year-on-year and up 55.6% month-on-month.
