Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in October 2020: Grain Throughput Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin ports in October 2020 grew by 10% year-on-year. Transit was up 10.6%, and import up 12.5%. Cabotage surged by 85.3%. Export, on the contrary, declined by 2.8%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in October 2020 made 1%.

    55% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 20.8% and timber and logs for 7.3%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in ferrous metals (up 6.7-fold), liquid foodstuffs (up 3.2-fold) and other bulk (suction) (up 2.9-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (grab) (-69.8%), grain (-20%) and other general cargo (-18.1%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 59.9% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in October. Astrakhan handled 34.4%, and Olya 5.7% of the total.
