Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in October 2020: Crude Oil Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in October 2020 decreased by 3.5%. Export declined by 2.7%, and cabotage was down 5.6%. Import, on the contrary, surged by 64.9%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in October 2020 amounted to 12.1%.

    43.3% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 17.8% and coal and coke for 17.7%.

    The highest growth was in the other bulk (suction) segment (up 9.7-fold), metal scrap (up 4.1-fold) and ferrous metals (up 3.4-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were crude oil (-14.9%), oil products (-12.3%), and reefer cargo (-7.9%).

    Murmansk accounted for 60.2% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in October. Sabetta handled 27.1%, and Varandey 4.9% of the total.
