Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in September 2020 Down 15.5%

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in September 2020 declined by 15.5% year-on-year. Transit was down 15.6%, and export down 33.7%. Import surged 1.5-fold, and cabotage was up 2.1-fold.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in September 2020 made 0.8%.

    52.2% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 16.5% and ferrous metals for 9.4%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in ferrous metals (up 5.2-fold), piece cargo (up 3-fold) and containerized cargo (up 2.1-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were liquid foodstuffs (-82.1%), other bulk (grab) (-62.5%) and ro-ro (-40%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 55.7% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in September. Astrakhan handled 38.4%, and Olya 5.9% of the total.
