Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in September 2020: Oil Products Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in September 2020 decreased by 11%. Export declined by 10.5%, and cabotage was down 13.4%. Import surged 4.9-fold.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in September 2020 amounted to 11.6%.

    43.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 18.5% and coal and coke for 15.9%.

    The highest growth was in the ferrous metals segment (up 4.9-fold), ore (+75.4%) and other bulk (grab) (+63%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were oil products (-81.4%), coal and coke (-29%), and chemical and mineral fertilizers (-18.1%).

    Murmansk accounted for 55.3% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in September. Sabetta handled 29.3%, and Varandey 4.4% of the total.
