Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in August 2020: Ferrous Metals Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in August 2020 remained much on the previous year’s level (+0.3%). Export increased by 1.5%. Cabotage was down 1.2%, and import down 20.3%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in August 2020 amounted to 13.1%.

    42.6% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, coal and coke accounted for 18.9% and LNG for 16.6%.

    The highest growth was in the ferrous metals segment (up 7.5-fold), metal scrap (+70.8%) and piece cargo (+56.3%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were reefer cargo (-21.6%), non-ferrous metals (-17.8%) containerized cargo (-13.2%).

    Murmansk accounted for 55.6% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in August. Sabetta handled 25.9%, and Arkhangelsk 5.5% of the total.
