Russian Railways’ Cargo Down 4% in January-August

  • During January-August 2020, Russian Railways loaded 816.9 mn tons of cargo, down 4% year-on-year.

    Coal loading declined by 8.1% down to 226.1 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 9% down to 140.2 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore was slightly up by 0.7% to 80.1 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were down 11.4% to 44.4 mn tons, timber and logs down 3.9% to 28.1 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 7.3% to 16.2 mn tons, cement down 8% to 16.7 mn tons, ferrous metal scrap down 13.3% to 8.7 mn tons, and industrial and forming materials down 5.9% down to 22.1 mn tons.

    Construction cargo was up 5.7% to 88.9 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 2.9% to 41.8 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur up 2.5% to 13.4 mn tons, grain up 20.6% to 15.2 mn tons, and coke loading up 1.3% to 7.3 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-August made 1,664.3 bn tons per km, down 4% year-on-year.

    In August, Russian Railways loaded 108.1 mn tons of cargo, down 0.8% year-on-year. Cargo throughput amounted to 273.7 bn tons per km, up 0.8% year-on-year.
