Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in May 2020 Doubles

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in May 2020 surged 2.2-fold year-on-year. Cabotage increased by 28.1%, export grew by 14.7%. Import, on the contrary, was down 8.2%. Transit made 266.2 thousand tons.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2020 made 1%.

    48.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 24.9% and timber and logs for 7.4%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the timber and logs (up 2.5-fold), other general cargo (up 2.2-fold) and grain (+21.4%).

    The commodities that decreased were foodstuffs (-46.8%), other bulk (grab) (-37.9%) and containerized cargo (-37.8%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 56% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in May. Astrakhan handled 34.6%, and Olya 9.4% of the total.
