Russian Railways’ Cargo Down in H1 2020

  • During January-June 2020, Russian Railways loaded 605.1 mn tons of cargo, down 4.5% year-on-year.

    Coal loading declined by 10.1% down to 168 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 7% down to 107 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore was level with the last year’s result amounting to 59.2 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were down 11.3% to 33.9 mn tons, timber and logs down 5.4% to 21 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 5.8% to 12.4 mn tons, cement down 9.4% to 11.4 mn tons, and ferrous metal scrap down 12.6% to 6 mn tons.

    Coke loading declined by 0.5% down to 5.4 mn tons, industrial and forming materials by 8.2% down to 15.6 mn tons.

    Construction cargo was up 5.1% to 63.2 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 2.6% to 31.1 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur up 1.3% to 9.8 mn tons, grain up 16.9% to 10.7 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-June made 1,238.1 bn tons per km, down 5.3% year-on-year.

    In June, Russian Railways loaded 97.1 mn tons of cargo, down 4.4 year-on-year. Cargo throughput amounted to 197.5 bn tons per km, down 4.1% year-on-year.
