Meat Import into Russia Down in Q1 2020

    According to SeaNews Russian Foreign Trade Customs Statistics online service, in Q1 2020 Russia imported 147.2 thousand tons of meat and meat by-products worth $382.3 mn. In monetary terms, meat import decreased by 14.9% year-on-year, and in terms of tonnage by 14.3%.

    Frozen beef accounts for the largest share in imports. During the first three months of 2020, 56 thousand tons (+13.1%) worth $203.2 mn (+23.8%) of frozen beef was imported. This includes 23.2 thousand tons worth $83.8 mn from Paraguay, 14.8 thousand tons worth $54.7 mn from Brazil and 8.9 thousand tons worth $32.8 mn from Belarus.

    The import of poultry and poultry by-products rose by 5% up to $84 mn in monetary terms, while in terms of tonnage it grew by 17.7% up to 55.2 thousand tons. 35 thousand tons worth $49.6 mn of these were supplied from Belarus and 15.9 thousand tons worth $29 mn from Brazil.

    The imports of fresh and chilled beef made 11.6 thousand tons (-39.9%) worth $46.4 mn (-33.8%). Almost all of the entire volume came from Belarus.

    The import of by-products decreased by 13.4% down to 20.1% thousand tons worth $36.1 mn (-12.2%). This includes 11.5 thousand tons worth $20.2 mn from Argentina and 3.9 thousand tons worth $7 mn from Paraguay.

    The main country of origin for Russia’s meat and meat by-products import, both in tonnage and monetary terms, is Belarus. In January-March 2020, 56.2 thousand tons of meat and meat by-products were imported from there, 2% more than during the same period in 2019. In monetary terms, imports from Belarus amounted to $128.7 mn (-8.2%).

    Import from Brazil decreased by 13.3% down to 32.7 thousand tons worth $88.5 mn, down 17.5%.

    27.9 thousand tons (+7.3%) worth $92 mn (+18.8%) was imported from Paraguay.
