Live Animals Import into Russia

    According to SeaNews Russian Foreign Trade Customs Statistics online service, in Q1 2020 Russia imported $56.8 mn worth of live animals, down 15.9% yea-on-year.

    This figure includes 25.1 thousand cattle (-8.6%) worth $40.5 mn. 16.6 thousand animals worth $24.9 mn were imported from Australia, 2.7 thousand animals worth 6.6 mn dollars from Denmark, and 2.3 animals worth $5.3 mn from Germany.

    The import of live pigs increased 3-fold up to 5.4 thousand animals. In monetary terms, it doubled to make $6.4 mn. The main countries of origin were Canada (3.2 thousand animals worth $4 mn) and Denmark (1.8 thousand animals woth $1.9 mn).

    Poultry imprort decreased by 5.3% down to 1.4 mn birds worth $5.4mn, about the same as a year ago.

    Other live animals imported during Q1 2020 include 15.6 thousand reptiles, 2.5 thousand minks, 1.6 thousand rabbits and 74 primates.

    The main country of origin for Russia’s live animal import in monetary terms was Australia. During Q1 2020, live animal shipments from Australia increased by 0.8% up to $24.9 mn, all of them being cattle.

    Imports from Denmark dropped by 90.4% down to $8.5 mn. 78.1% of this sum was paid for cattle and 21.9% for pigs.

    The import of live animals from Germany halved down to $7.2 mn, three quarters of these being cattle and 19.1% poultry.
