Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in March 2020: Oil Product Up

  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in March 2020 declined by 5.9%. Cabotage decreased by 2.8%, and export was down 8.1%. Import, on the contrary, grew by 42.4%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in March 2020 amounted to 11.3%.

    47.6% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 21.1% and coal and coke for 15.4%.

    The highest growth was in the oil product segment (up 3.5-fold), other general cargo (+90.1%) and ore (+54.4%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (grab) (-67%), coal and coke (-16.8%) and crude oil (-8.2%).

    Murmansk accounted for 57% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in March. Sabetta handled 30.2%, and Varandey 7.7% of the total.
