Kronstadt Marine Plant has put into operation the M.I.Surgin dry dock after many years of conservation. Two firefighters and a diving boat of the Leningrad Naval Base have already docked. They will be painted and have their bottom fittings repaired, according to United Shipbuilding Company.
In 2018, the dock was taken out of conservation and examined. During 2019 the shipyard’s specialists repaired the main communications, the caisson, and the bottom of the dock. The shipyard financed the works with its own money.
Taking into account the two-chamber configuration, the dock can accommodate small ships and vessels with low draft like tugs, boats, trawlers, barges, yachts. The shipyard also plans to use the dock for the construction of small vessels.
The M.I.Surgin dock is currently the oldest operating dry dock not only in Kronstadt, but in entire Russia. It was built in 1830-1846 to repair frigates, brigades, corvettes, gunboats, later destroyers, submarines, trawlers, small steamships and icebreakers.
