Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput: Grain Up 73%

  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in February 2020 grew by 47.3% year-on-year. Import doubled, cabotage was surged by 49.3%, transit by 64.7%, and export by 25%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in February 2020 made 1.1%.

    45.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 33.3% and piece cargo for 5%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the other bulk (grab) (up 2.6-fold), piece cargo (+73.7%) and grain (+73.2%).

    The commodities that decreased were containerized cargo (-42.1%) and foodstuffs (-32.5%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 65.4% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in February. Astrakhan handled 27.6%, and Olya 7% of the total.
