Russian Railways’ Cargo Sliding

  • During January-November 2019 Russian Railways loaded 1.172 bn tons of cargo, down 0.8% year-on-year. Almost all commodities were down.

    Coal loading declined by 0.4% down to 341.4 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 2.1% down to 211 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were down 5.5% to 67.3 mn tons, timber and logs down 8.3% to 38.4 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 1% to 23.8 mn tons. Grain loading dropped by 21.4% down to 19.4 mn tons.

    Ferrous metal scrap declined by 4.2% down to 12.7 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur by 3% down to 16.4 mn tons, coke by 2.6% down to 9 mn tons.

    Construction cargo was up down 0.1% to 115 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur down 2.5% to 17.9 mn tons, coke down 3.7% to 9.84 mn tons, and ferrous metals scrap down 7.5% to 13.7 mn tons.

    Ferrous and manganese ore was up 3.6% to 110.2 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 3.1% to 55.5 mn tons, amd cement up 4.5% to 24.8 mn tons.

    In November, Russian Railways loaded 105.5 mn tons, down 1.6% year-on-year and down 3.6% month-on-month.

    Cargo throughput in January-November 2019 made 2,382.6 bn ton/km, up 0.4% year-on-year.

    In November, cargo throughput decreased by 3.3% year-on-year down to 213.2 bn ton/km.
