Russia’s Wheat Export and Import Down

  • According to the RF Federal Customs Service statistics, during January-May Russia exported 9.5 mn tons of wheat and meslin, down 44.2% year-on-year. In terms of value, grain export dropped 32.1% down to $2.12 bn.

    Wheat import into Russia during January-May 2019 declined by 30.2% down to 87.2 thousand tons. Barley import was down 6.7% to 4.2 thousand tons, corn import decreased by 15.9% down to 26 thousand tons.

    In terms of value, wheat import was up 17.8% to $20.5 mn. Barley import doubled to make $1.6 bn, while corn import declined 23.2% down to $92 mn.

    In May alone, wheat and meslin export made some 1 mn tons, down 75% year-on-year and down 47.7% month-on-month. In terms of value, it dropped 71.3% year-on-year and 49.1% month-on-month down to $220.7 mn.

    Wheat import in May made 14.5 thousand tons, down 60.5% year-on-year and down 18.5% month-on-month. Corn import dropped 78.6% year-on-year and 71.9% month-on-month down to 0.9 thousand tons. Barley import declined 66.7% year-on-year and 33.3% month-on-month down to 400 tons.

    In terms of value, wheat import in May 2019 made $3.6 bn, down 28% year-on-year and down 7.7% month-on-month. Corn import dropped 86.7% year-on-year and 86.8% month-on-month down to $1.2 mn. Barley import was worth $100 thousand, down 50% year-on-year and down 66.7% month-on-month.
