Azov and Caspian Freight Market, Week 28, 2019

  • In the Sea of Azov, the lack of available tonnage is causing further rates increase. During past week, there was a $2 per metric ton freight rise for all directions.

    But, according to Rufco shipbrokers, owners however still prefer shorter laden legs to gain better voyage turn-around and benefits of the rising market. The lack of tonnage and increasing number of available cargoes could lead the market even further.

    The Black Sea coasters market and especially handy segment also showing an upward trend. Meanwhile shallow draft sea coasters are trying to benefit from the better Azov market by proposing their vessels for Temryuk loading.

    Freight rates to the Sea of Marmara from Rostov make $27-28 per ton.

    Freight rates from Rostov to SE Black Sea ports are $25-26 per ton.

    In the Caspian, incoming barley and corn are drivers for the market. Upper Volga River ports have also entered the game with grain shipments both to the Caspian and Marmara directions.

    The current freight rates from Astrakhan to Iran make $29-31 per ton.
