Food Products Import into Russia

  • According to the RF Federal Customs Service’s statistics, in January-March 2019, Russia imported 98 thousand tons of fresh and frozen meat, up 5.5% year-on-year. Fish import was down 10.2% to 107.6 thousand tons.

    Fresh and frozen poultry import decreased slightly by 0.2% year-on-year down to 49 thousand tons.

    Canned meat and meat specialties import declined by by 5.4% down to 3.5 thousand tons.

    Milk and condensed cream import was up 31.5% to 48.4 thousand tons. Cheese and cottage cheese import increased by 38% up to 84.9 thousand tons. Butter import doubled amounting to 29 thousand tons.

    Vegetable oil import dropped by 90.8% down to 0.8 thousand tons. Palm oil import also declined, by 5.6% down to 251.5 thousand tons.

    Citrus fruit import was up 14.6% to 643.5 thousand tons, bananas import up 2.6% to 426.7 thousand tons, while apples import decreased by 3.2% down to 318.3 thousand tons.

    Raw sugar import remained on the previous year’s level making 1.3 thousand tons, white sugar import increased by 11.8% up to 78.8 thousand tons.

    In March, coffee import surged by 48.3% year-on-year and by 34.8% month-on-month up to 22.1 thousand tons. Tea import was down 13.6% year-on-year and 3.8% month-on-month to 12.7 thousand tons.

    In March, the following categories demonstrated a year-on-year decline in import volumes: palm oil (-39.8% to 58.3 thousand tons), apples (-25.9% to 114.1 thousand tons), cheese and cottage cheese (-25.9% to 20.6 thousand tons), poultry (-7.3% to 17.8 thousand tons), canned meat and meat delicacies (-7.1% to 1.3 thousand tons) and vegetable oil (-95.3% to 0.2 thousand tons).

    Month-on-month, citrus fruit import was down 8.7% to 188.8 thousand tons and palm oil down 50.5%. Other food categories import increased.

    Coffee import in January-March grew by 19.5% up to 54.6 thousand tons, while tea import declined by 10.6% down to 35.6 thousand tons.
