IMO’s NCSR Approves TSS for Bering Sea

  • The IMO Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications, Search & Rescue (NCSR) has approved establishing recommended shipping routes in the Bering Sea and the Bering Strait suggested by Russia and the US.

According to the RF Ministry of transport, the decision was made at the 5th session of NCSR that was held on February 19-23.

The scheme suggested envisages establishing six two-way 4-mile wide lanes recommended for vessel traffic in the Bering Strait and on approaches to it from Russia and the US and six precautionary areas at crossings and turning points.

In the coming years, vessel traffic in the Bering Strait is expected to grow due to the increasing LNG export from both Russia (from Sabetta) and the USA (from Alaska).
