Russian Railways’ Container Traffic

  • In January 2017, Russian Railways carried 317.5 thousand TEU, up 11.3% year-on-year. Month-on-month, rail container traffic dropped 39.1%.

    Domestic container transportation in January grew 5.9% year-on-year to 134.5 thousand TEU. Export traffic was up 11.2% to 85.5 thousand TEU, import traffic up 14% to 63.2 thousand TEU, and transit surged 32.1% to 34.3 thousand TEU.

    According to Russian Railways’ statistics, machinery, equipment and engines transportation grew the most, up 31.3% year-on-year to 12.9 thousand TEU, timber and logs volume grew 28.1% to 22.8 thousand TEU.

    Chemical and mineral fertilizers were up 4.9% to 5.5 thousand TEU, cars up 13.9% to 14.7 thousand TEU, industrial goods up 13.9% to 20.8 thousand TEU, hardware up 21.1% to 17 thousand TEU, paper up 8.1% to 24.7 thousand TEU, chemicals and soda up 6.8% to 36 thousand TEU.

    Ferrous metals transportation grew 12.5% up to 8.4 thousand TEU while non-ferrous metals volume increased 3.7% to 8.8 thousand TEU. Mixed and other cargo traffic volume amounted to 5.4 thousand TEU, up 4.9% year-on-year. Construction cargo was stable on the last January’s level.

    Compared to December 2017, almost all cargo categories were down but for paper, which grew 6%.
