Russian Grain Imports and Exports

  • In January-October, 2017, Russia exported 24.5 mn tons of wheat and meslin. This is 23.1% more than during the same period last year.

    It is worth noting that in October exports of Russian grain amounted to more than 3.6 mn tons, which is 14.4% less than in the previous month.

    According to the Federal Customs Service, during the first 10 months of this year grain exports in terms of money increased by 30.4% to $4.33 bn.

    About 95% of the total grain exports goes to non-CIS countries. In total in January-October 2017, exports of Russian wheat and meslin to these countries amounted to 23.3 mn tons (+23.9%).

    Wheat exports to the CIS countries reached 1.17 mn tons, up 7.4% compared to January-October 2016.

    In terms of money, exports to non-CIS countries grew by 31.8% to more than $ 4.1 bn, to the CIS countries – by 6.1% to $199.8 mn.

    At the same time, imports of wheat to Russia in January-October 2017 fell by 58.8% to 213.2 thousand tons. In terms of money, wheat imports fell 58.6% to $32.7 mn.

    However, barley imports during the 10 months of 2017 increased by 33.3% (to 164.4 thousand tons), corn – by 37.9% (to 42.2 thousand tons). It is worth noting that in October imports of barley and corn to Russia decreased significantly, while imports of wheat notably grew.

    In terms of money, imports of barley and corn increased by 2.2 times (to $32.3 mn) and by 37.6% (to $ 139.4 mn) respectively.
